Saksham believes that the differently-abled people are not burden on the society but assets of the nation. Though presently dedicated to the service of visually impaired, Saksham has its commitment towards all the persons with various disabilities and also to environment, health and other social activities to strengthen the society. Presently, it is running many projects for integrated development of the differently abled people.

Saksham has started many projects exclusivly for women development. One among them is Virangula Kendra in Akola, Maharashtra. It may be seen as a recreation centre but it is a project for complete development of the visually challenged women. The special emphasis is on self-reliance. They are imparted training of various kinds of home industries, rangoli, handicraft training, making paper envelops, bags, yogasan, meditation, assistance on legal rights, etc.

Women at this centre regularly manufacture many kinds of products including spices, dry chatani, potato chips, sabudana papad, paper bags etc. It is purchased by local grocery store owners, medical stores, etc. in bulk.

The regular training and practice of yogasan and meditation have cured many of their physical ailments. A gynecologist conducts regular check up of all the women once in two months. They are also guided about cleanliness. Recently, the project organised a unique programme in which the mothers, who pay special attention to differently-abled girls, are felicitated.

A group of women is being imparted special training for a cultural programme to be staged at forthcoming foundation day of Saksham. The old visually-challenged women are being provided Braille training while the other women are being imparted training of computer. This is the reason
many of the women at the centre regularly visit the Braille library and read books there. Visually challenged women hostel.

In Kaladi, Kerala, Saksham has started a hostel for visually-challenged women where visually challenged girls and other visually challenged women are housed with a facility of food and honourable living. Efforts are made here to make the women self-reliant by providing them different kinds of training.

Today, more than 400 women activists are active in different activities like audio recording, cassette library management, Braille books production, awakening for eye donation, imparting different kinds of training to women, personality development camps, residence management etc. Majority of the women activist are well-educated who spare time from their daily family responsibilities and dedicate to these service activities. It is the best example of utilising spare time and also getting mental peace and satisfaction. Over 350 visually challenged or differently- abled women have directly been benefited through all these activities.

Sri Vivekananda Maharogi Arogya Kendram, Rajahmundry
With the sole aim of supporting severely disabled leprosy people and their kith and kin who have no other option except to live along with the patients, Sri Vivekananda Maharogi Arogya Kendram was established in 1975 with the initiative of late Dr Mandalvilli Mallikarjuna Rao of Rajahmundry town with the active cooperation of Ramesh Kumar Jain and his friends. The then District Collector encouraged the cause by allotting 11 acres of land to the kendram. The kendram was registered in 1978 under the societies act.

At Kakinada, Rajahmundry and in the nearby villages of these towns, a number of activities have been undertaken such as financial aid, providing medical assistance to old and disabled leprosy affected people. At Bommuru village, near Rajahmundry town, Sri Vivekananda Hospital has been set up since 2002. Around 500 families from 10 surrounding villages of Bommuru are getting benefitted. The medicines are also supplied free of cost.

Besides villagers, around 100 leprosy affected people living in Sri Vivekananda Maharogi Arogya Kendram and 100 leprosy patients living in the surrounding villages are also receiving medical treatment at the hospital. A retired civil surgeon is rendering his valuable services to the hospital. Along with the allopathic treatment, homoeopathic treatment is also being provided. Two experienced doctors are rendering their dedicated services.

Activities:

Right from the beginning, around 100-120 patients are being supported by the kendram by providing shelter, food, medical aid, footwear, clothes and all other necessary amenities. Nursery seedlings are being grown under the scheme of Social Forest Department. Tobacco nursery is being maintained in partnership with local farmers. The kendram has 13 coir machines provided by Coir Board. The inmates and some other people are undergoing training in the preparation of coir thread. Occasional speeches on our culture, history, are being arranged. A Bal Sanskar Kendra for children is being run. All Hindu festivals are celebrated in the kendram.

Infrastructure:

In the beginning, the inmates used to live in thatched huts. In 1983 Andhra Pradesh Government got 50 houses constructed under RLEGP scheme. After 20 years when those houses were getting dilapidated the then state government sanctioned 40 houses under Indira Awas Yojana and got them constructed immediately in 2002-03. Presently, 120 people are getting assistance from the kendram. Among them, 100 are inmates and the others are outsiders. Among the inmates, 80 of them are patients and the remaining 20 are their dependent children.

Agricultural land of around 3 acre is allotted so that every able-bodied individual has the satisfaction that he is also contributing to the welfare of the inmates by generating some income.
A community hall in the memory of Sri Gopalrao Thakur and Surya Mandiram (Sun temple) were constructed in 1996-97 to conduct cultural, philosophical and spiritual activities. Goshala is being maintained with 12 cows so that the inmates can worship Mother Cow in accordance with the Hindu belief that leprosy will never afflict a cow worshipper in their future lives.

Moulding character through service – Vaidehi Seva Samiti (Andhra Pradesh)

Moulding character through service – Vaidehi Seva Samiti (Andhra Pradesh)
VAIDEHI KISHORI VIKAS YOJANA  :

Children moving around with untidy and scantly clad clothes, open drain overflowing, this is the common scene when one visits the unlimited slums irrespective of their geographical locations. Such unhygienic setting spreads disease and robs the slum dwellers of their precious hard-earn income. Also one more observation made by Seva bharathi volunteers is that any activity can sustain only if it is taken up and owned by the local people. Even after half a century of freedom we have such slums in the cities which should be engines of development. But they today end up as undeveloped islands of poverty, diseases and unemployment.
There are an approximate 400 and odd slums in the twin cities, after a detailed survey and observative study is the Vaidehi Kishori Vikas Yojana. The scheme shall have its administrative headquarters at Vaidehi Seva samithi, Saidabad and launched by Sri Sitaram Kedaliya, Akhila bharatha Seva pramukh in Jan ‘05. This is an effort to bring self reliance, health, education and awareness to the young and the old alike in the slums. The young volunteers in the age group 12-18 and especially girls shall be selected and trained, to equip them with information as well as the motivation to be the catalyst for the change.

In the first phase of the scheme 25 youth are selected and trained in Vocational skills, informal schooling, literacy campaigns, health and hygiene, good food habits and diet, Simple physical work out including Yoga. Simple educative and entertaining stories, songs, folk arts etc., are also part of volunteers training. The scheme demands 3 hours of daily volunteering when he / she shall make 3 visits to the allotted slums. The young volunteer goes about building relationships as well as bridges towards development and shall grow as a nucleus for development activities.
There are 6 matajis (wardens) to look after and to care the ashram girls.7/8 retired voluntaries will come to ashram daily and share the work of the ashram .One will see the education of the children, one will maintain the accounts, the other will take care the health of the children, purchases provisions, stationery etc and they receive the guest show the building and the ashram girls and explain them about they secrete work of Vaidehi Ashram.

Out of total 112 girls 22 girls are college students .The elder girls of our ashram who are studying college also share the duties of ashram. There also help them in their studies and preparing food and other necessary works.

On 15th August 2013 one of the ashram girl named P.Umadevi who has completed her diploma, MBA married to Shravan  completed his B.Tech and working as a Software Engineer in TCS. With this 17 marriages are performed in the ashram.
Vaidehi Seva Samiti was started in Hyderabad in 1993. The prime objective has been to adopt the girls from 5-9 years of age who have no family and no shelter. It brings them up in a very congenial atmosphere assuring them love and affection which they rightly deserve. The Samiti develops in them a sense of patriotism and discipline and a feeling of love for life and values. A respect for Bharatiya culture and traditions is also inculcated among them. Finally they are provided with all the opportunities and help E lead a decent life.

To achieve these objectives a small Ashram with 3 rooms was started in 1993. Later, with donations from the society, the Samiti built its own three-story building which can accommodate 150 girls in the premises of 1750 sq. yards at Saraswati Nagar in Hyderabad.Presently the Vaidehi Seva Samiti runs three major projects—Vaidehi Ashram (Nirashrita Balika Vasati Griham), Vaidehi Kishori Vikas Yojana, (Development Project for Adolescent Girls of Slums) and Vaidehi Mahila Vikas Yojana (Development Project for Poor and Neglected Women).

All these projects are managed by separate Executive Bodies constituted by the Samiti. Vaidehi Seva Samiti has been recognised by the Women and Child Welfare Department of Andhra Pradesh Government.

One of the girls is studying in B.tech 3rd year, one in B.Sc final year, one in nursing and one is practicing weight lifting in a reputed sports school of Vijayawada. Three girls have completed diploma in civil engineering and are doing apprentice. The other six girls are studying in Polytechnic Colleges in Hyderabad, Suryapet and Nizamabad. Apart from this formal education they are also taught fine arts like music, painting, dance and handicrafts like embroidery, tailoring, screen printing. Physical exercises like Karate, yogasan and Surya Namaskar are regularly. 66 The girls are imparted training for overall development and to enable theni to be responsible citizens of the country. They are not only educated and trained but are also provided with sufficient opportunities to lead an independent life. The Ashram has also taken the responsibility to arrange and conduct the marriage of the grown up girls.

They are also exposed to special personality courses conducted by eminent persons. Daily one hour shakha of Rashtra Sevika Samiti is also held which helps them to acquire courage, patriotism and attitude of service to others. Thus, the residents of the Ashram are given training for overall development and enable them to be responsible citizens of the country. The girls are not only educated and trained but are also provided with sufficient opportunities to lead an independent life. The Ashram has also taken the responsibility to arrange and conduct marriages of the grown up girls. As of now the Ashram has taken care of marriages of 10 Ashram girls during the last ten years.

Vaidehi Kishori Vikas Yojna Under this project, 50 slum areas have been selected to impart training in various aspects to adolescent girls with special emphasis on education, health and hygiene, cultural development and samskars. This training helped them starting self-employment. Vaidehi Mahila Vikas Yojna Under this project, economically deprived women are imparted various kinds of training like computer, fashion designing, embroidery work, etc. so as to make them economically self-reliant. Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta (TAMA) conducted a scholarship examination on June 28, 2009. It awarded scholarship to 21 Ashram girls. This programme was attended by several dignitaries and eminent persons. Board members of an organisation of retired IAS and IFS officers visited the Ashram on July 26, 2009. They sponsored one year education expenses of nine girls of the Ashram studying polytechnic.

The Ashram is frequently visited by doctors from various medical colleges to guide and help maintain the health of the Ashram girls. Annual function Annual function is organised every year.

All visitors and donors are invited in the function. As of now 17, such functions have been conducted. These events are presided over by high profile people like High Court judges, IAS and IPS Officers, philanthropist’s etc. In the event, vocal, cultural and patriotic performances are given by the Ashram girls. Yogasan and Karate abilities of girls are also demonstrated. The iperformances are applauded and appreciated by one and all.

Grand daughters perform last rites of Granny
Daughters are still regarded as burden in some families. They take the birth of a girl in the family as a curse. Majority of the people feel that girls cannot perform any ritual. hi such an atmosphere, performing last rites of grand mother by the grand daughters is an admirable step in the male-dominated society. In order to establish the involvement of girls in rituals, the last journey of grand mother was taken out on the shoulders of the grand daughters in Gaya, Bihar.

People wish for a son due to superstitions and male-dominance in the society. But now some people have started a campaign to change this mentality. When Sugia Devi (86) of Vidhi village under Barachatti police station (Gaya district) died, her last rites were performed by her two grand daughters. Sugia Devi was the mother of Prof. Ramkrishna Yadavv.

He encouraged his two daughters Neelam and Swikriti to perform the last rites. They not only carried the dead body on their soldiers but also performed the last rites. All family members of Prof. Yadav were present at that time. There are some families who indulge in foeticide due to superstitions. Prof. Yadav shows the way by allowing his daughters to perform last rites of his mother. Before inspiring others he started this campaign from his own house.

An initiative to plant Nisi (Tusli) in every house – Deendayal Dham, Mathura

Deendayal Dham, Mathura – An initiative to plant Nisi (Tusli) in every house

There is a 300-year old banyan tree at Deendayal Dham. One very old pond is also there. The rainwater is stored in this pond. This is the reason that the ground water around this pond is potable. It is important because all the water sources here are salty and are not fit for drinking. Thousands of villagers collect drinking water from here every day. Sometimes this pond is recharged with canal water so that there is no shortage of drinking water in the area.

There is also a small pond which is used for animals and washing clothes.

In the east of Deendayal Dham, the Govardhan nallah flows. It has sufficient water during the rainy season, but this whole water directly flows into the Yamuna without any use. During the summer, some water is also released in this nallah from the Agra canal for irrigation.

There is a water technology centre at outfall of this nallah. Effort is on to build a check-dam at the outfall with the help of the Indian Institute of Agriculture Research, Pusa, New Delhi and the District Administration, Mathura.

There is a hostel and workers’ residential complex in the premises of Deendayal Dham. Work is going on to reuse the waste water produced here for irrigation after treating it. An amla garden was developed on a two acre plot in Deendayal Dham during the year 1997. It was a good initiative for environmental protection.

During the year 2007 plants of about 5,000 shade-giving trees were planted which are growing perfectly. About 8,000 more saplings were planted in the year 2009. Now work is going on to plant at least one Tusli in every house in and around the villagesof Deendayal Dham.

Serving the humanity – Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust

Serving the humanity – Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust

Leprosy-afflicted persons are the   most crippled even amongst the cripples; they are treated as untouchable, neglected by relatives and ostracised by the society. They live the life as in hell, living on pavements or in huts, waiting for the end. To give them human dignity, security and love is a stupendous task. Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust has taken up this task.

Mentally challenged people also pose many problems to their relatives. The heartless society not only mocks at them, but forces them towards madness. Shrimad Rajchandra Mansik Apang Mandir for males is the only residential centre in Gujarat for such adult mentally-challenged males. Founder of the Trust, Sureshbhai, clearly understood that due to misconceptions and strong prejudice of the Indian society against leprosy, the rehabilitated leprosy persons would never be able to lead a normal life in the society. Hence, he extended the service of `Sahyog’ not only to treat the patients, but also to rehabilitate them as productive individuals and make them financially independent.

He encouraged marriages among the male and female patients of the Ashram. The married couples are also provided with a house to live. They are also given a charkha (a weaving machine). With this they spin yarn and attain financial independence.

At present, the Ashram has 111 such rehabilitated couples. Some of them also help in the office administration, hospital, kitchen, farming, construction and in taking care of the mentally challenged persons. The children of these families and also of parents staying in leprosy slums of various cities are also taken care of. These children are provided with good education facilities. They are nurtured to become good citizens. To help them to become financially independent, they are offered loans without interest so that they can become self employed.

The seeds of `Sahyog’ were sowed way back in the year 1970, when a young, brilliant lecturer Shri Suresh Soni from the MS University of Baroda started helping leprosy-afflicted persons in the leprosy slums of Baroda. What started as a good cause became a mission for him. Instead of a comfortable materialistic life, he opted to help leprosy-afflicted persons.

The Trust encourages marriages among male and female
patients of the Ashram. The married couples
are provided with a house to live. They
are granted a charkha with
which they spin yarn and attain
financial independence. At
present, the Ashram has 111
such rehabilitated couples. Dressing
of a leprosy afflicted patient.
The year 1988 was another turning point when he started Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust. Sarvoday Ashram Mandhi donated 28 acres of land for this cause. Shri Suresh Soni and Smt. Indira Soni (his wife), moved to Rajendranagar crossing, along with 20 leprosy afflicted persons and 6 children.

At present the Trust serves 433 leprosy-afflicted persons who have come from various states. It includes 123 from Gujarat, 106 from West Bengal, 123 from Maharashtra and 81 from other states. Among them 187 are grossly deformed; 101 spin on amber charkha; 137 help in various jobs of the Ashram and 8 are working on their own. Moreover, the Trust also caters to 244 children.

Each house in the Village has a Tulsikyara where in, every day at 7-30 pm a lamp is lightened to be followed by prayer to pray the almighty God to give happiness to all those who help the Sahyog and also to those who enlighten others to help. The Trust has a science mobile van going to schools to create scientific attitude and also performs science textbook experiments for the students of Std. 5th to 10th. Van also goes to PTC colleges.

The organisation received the Godphrey Philips State Gold Award in 2006. State Award by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the best institute for disabled for the year 2002 was also granted.

It also bagged the National Award of Rs. 1 lakh from Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for the best institute for disabled for the year 2003. It was awarded through the hands of the then President of India Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The National Award of Rs. 3 lakh by Ministry of Human Resources, Women and Child Welfare for the services rendered in the field of welfare and development of children.

Tara Cancer Foundation, Kolkata-An initiative for cancer-free future generation

Tara Cancer Foundation, Kolkata
An initiative for cancer-free future generation

It was 4th April 2010, Tara Cancer Foundation started its journey to do something for mankind. The Foundation is an initiative liable for developing cancer resistance consciousness among the people of downtrodden class. It works to improve cancer awareness among common people irrespective of social and financial status. It educates the people to visit any doctor or health centre, if they have any doubt of having early symptoms of the disease.
Inhaling of tobacco or such elements is the major threat to this modern era. To counter this threat special awareness is developed among the people and they are helped to understand the adverse effects of passive smoking and taking tobacco directly. It also spreads out research and training in all aspects dealing with prevention and care of cancer.
To achieve this goal, the Foundation has been organizing several camps related to cancer awareness and screening programme in rural parts of the districts like Hooghly, Canning, Burdwan and also in schools etc. In its panel it has some doctors and Oncologists (in Kolkata and also outside of Kolkata like Dr Ravi Kannan in Silchar and Dr Anshuman Kumar at Noida and also some trained Nurse and MSW who have already trained up in Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in Silchar use to help us in our work. Its staff has already arranged several awareness camps and also free screening camps in rural areas, as well as in slum areas. The Foundation also organised door-to-door campaign in each village and made people aware about the symptoms of cancer. In the camps it got many patients who needed to be medically supported but were not able to afford this medical expense. So the Foundation wants to help them to get this medical support at a nominal cost. It usually does the tests like Oral, Breast, Cervix and also Pap smear and FNAC tests against detection of cancer at the camp itself.

The fear associated with cancer mainly arises due to lack of knowledge. With awareness lectures the Foundation hopes to diminish them and make people realise that cancer is a preventable and a curable disease if detected early and treatment given promptly.
The Foundation was founded in the memory of the late Tara Ben Patel to help the people in the fight against cancer. Apart from spreading awareness about cancer related facts and treatments and provide necessary help to underprivileged cancer patients, it also aims to provide the best accessibility for palliative care to advanced cancer patients.
The Foundation organised door-to-door campaign in villages and made people aware about the symptoms of cancer. In the screening camps it got many patients who needed to be medically supported but were not able to afford this medical expense. Therefore, through the screening camps it is tried to detect cancer at early stages.
The Indian subcontinent occupies 2.4 per cent of the world land mass and is home to 16.5 per cent of the world population. It is roughly estimated that at any given time there will be 3 million cancer patients in India. The most common cancers found in males were cancers of the lung, pharynx, esophagus, tongue, and stomach while among females cancers of the cervix, breast. Ovary, esophagus and mouth were common. Cancerstatistics demonstrate that cancers frequently observed in India are lifestyle dependent, with offending factors such as tobacco usage, low socio-economic status, multiple pregnancies and poor sexual hygiene. These factors are closely related to the population living in rural surroundings and therefore they are targeted for cancer prevention. Low socio-economic status and low literacy ensure that most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease.

The fear associated with cancer mainly arises due to lack of knowledge. With awareness lectures the Foundation hopes to diminish them and make people realise that cancer is a preventable and a curable disease if detected early and treatment given promptly. In a developing country like ours most cases of cancer are detected in the advanced stages by which time they become untreatable. With screening camps we hope to detect cancer in its early stages thus increasing the chances of an effective cure.
