Saksham believes that the differently-abled people are not burden on the society but assets of the nation. Though presently dedicated to the service of visually impaired, Saksham has its commitment towards all the persons with various disabilities and also to environment, health and other social activities to strengthen the society. Presently, it is running many projects for integrated development of the differently abled people.

Saksham has started many projects exclusivly for women development. One among them is Virangula Kendra in Akola, Maharashtra. It may be seen as a recreation centre but it is a project for complete development of the visually challenged women. The special emphasis is on self-reliance. They are imparted training of various kinds of home industries, rangoli, handicraft training, making paper envelops, bags, yogasan, meditation, assistance on legal rights, etc.

Women at this centre regularly manufacture many kinds of products including spices, dry chatani, potato chips, sabudana papad, paper bags etc. It is purchased by local grocery store owners, medical stores, etc. in bulk.

The regular training and practice of yogasan and meditation have cured many of their physical ailments. A gynecologist conducts regular check up of all the women once in two months. They are also guided about cleanliness. Recently, the project organised a unique programme in which the mothers, who pay special attention to differently-abled girls, are felicitated.

A group of women is being imparted special training for a cultural programme to be staged at forthcoming foundation day of Saksham. The old visually-challenged women are being provided Braille training while the other women are being imparted training of computer. This is the reason
many of the women at the centre regularly visit the Braille library and read books there. Visually challenged women hostel.

In Kaladi, Kerala, Saksham has started a hostel for visually-challenged women where visually challenged girls and other visually challenged women are housed with a facility of food and honourable living. Efforts are made here to make the women self-reliant by providing them different kinds of training.

Today, more than 400 women activists are active in different activities like audio recording, cassette library management, Braille books production, awakening for eye donation, imparting different kinds of training to women, personality development camps, residence management etc. Majority of the women activist are well-educated who spare time from their daily family responsibilities and dedicate to these service activities. It is the best example of utilising spare time and also getting mental peace and satisfaction. Over 350 visually challenged or differently- abled women have directly been benefited through all these activities.

Small beginning turns into a big campaign

Small beginning turns into a big campaign
How a small initiative turns into a big campaign can be witnessed in Basantpur (Siwan, Bihar) where a lady Alleha Bano started the work of making the women self-reliant. She started this work in 1990.
She got the training of cutting-tailoring in 1998 from KoLicata. Drawing inspiration from her teachers she decided to fruther impart this training free of cost to economically deprived and needy women of her village. She purchased a sewing machine in 1990 and started imparting the training in Sohilpatti Market of Basantpur block. Gradually, the number of machines and the trainees increased.
Till now more than 1300 women have already learnt cutting-tailoring from this centre. Presently, 26 women are getting the training. Alleha Bano is being assisted by her 12th pass daughter Razia. After every six month, batch of 26 girls or women starts getting the training.

In the beginning, Alleha Bano was hesitant to start the work and many times she was discouraged by the people including her family members. But she continued her work. Now she is a respected woman in Basantpur block. She says the self-confidence that has developed among these women after becoming financially strong is worth seeing. The respect both in the family and the locality has increased many fold.

Alleviating the sufferings of girls with mental aberration-Sree Parvathy Sevanilayam, Thrissur

Alleviating the sufferings of girls with mental

aberration

Bharatiya culture emphasises the need for care of the underprivileged and deprived, especially womenfolk who are images of Goddess parashakti. There is no meaning to seek God elsewhere, when Be himself appears before us discarded in the society. Children with mental aberration by birth are a curse for the family. Modern medical system differentiates the same by names, but our conventional systems reason out the causes and adopt multi-dimensional approach to solve the problem. It includes support, care, medication, group activities and prayer.

The break of conventional joint family system and emergence of nuclear family has added fuel to the fire and the support systems and remedial approaches by families and village groups have vanished. Families cannot manage the victim on their own, especially when the families belong to poor financial set up.

Considering all these aspects, swayamsevaks and philanthropists in and around Thrissur town in Kerala decided to set up a project in the year 2000 to alleviate the sufferings of such people. Even though work on the project was started in 2000, the registration of the Trust was formulated in 2004 in the name of Sree Parvathy Sevanilayam.

Presently the project is accommodated in a pucca building of 2000 sq. ft. Thirteen girls are inmates in the Kendram. The set up consists of one Sevavrati, 4 full timers and an office incharge. The girls’ mental health is monitored periodically by psychiatrists to register improvement and remedial action. Majority of inmates go to special school meant for such people daily. Psychiatrists visit the centre periodically to assess the mental state of girls. The inmates through the care provided to them are showing considerable improvement in their health. The project is managed by a committee drawn from the members who are 40 in strength. Dignitaries from various walks of society visit the centre, which is really a motivating factor. It is proposed to accommodate more people by expanding the infrastructure.
